Puy de Dome

The Puy de Dome, at 4800 ft, is the highest peak in the area around Pontgibaud. There is a road to the top, although with limited parking at the top it is necessary, during the summer season, to park at the bottom and get a bus. At the top is a visitor centre and restaurant, there is also a weather station and the ruins of a Roman Temple. The views are stunning provided you pick a day with good weather, see picture below for what to avoid. We have never been up in good weather but when we do we will get photos of the view. The Puy can be seen from the top of the village so it is worth checking if the top is free from cloud before making the journey.

The picture below was taken from a view point on the top of the hill of St Pierre, about 3 miles up the valley from Pontgibaud, although the volcanoes dominate the sky line for most of the area
