Cycling and walking

The countryside surrounding Pontgibaud is beautiful and you don't have to travel far before seeing some outstanding views. There are numerous way marked trails for both walkers and mountain bikes, if you wish to keep off the roads, although the back roads are relatively free of traffic. The area is of course mountainous but for the less adventurous it is possible to plan routes which avoid the worst of the hills. Here Janet is on the road out of town which follows the west shore of the river Sioule, behind her is the church of St Pierre. Mounted on a prominent hill in the valley of the Sioule it has a view point over the Central Massif range of volcanoes, the tallest being the Puy de Dome. Below is the view from this vantage point with the Puy de Comb to the left of the picture and the Puy de Dome to the right.

The photo below was taken on the Sioule a few miles down stream from Pontgibaud,on the road to Montfermy

A pleasant cycle ride in the direction of Mazaye and Chambois, either by road or trail, affords some beautiful views of the Puy de Dome
