Known as Plages in France, these are usually man made recreational areas on the shores of reservoirs, lakes or rivers. The nearest is at Plan Eau d’Anchald, about a 10 min drive. This is on a hydroelectric dammed reservoir and has a small beach, sun bathing grass bank but not much shade and a marked swimming area with lifeguard. There are changing facilities, toilets and a kiosk that sells drinks and ice creams. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of this site.

A better site with more facilities is less than 30 mins drive. St Jacques d’Ambur has a large beach with great views over the dammed River Sioulet, plenty of grassed areas for sun bathing with shade available under the surrounding trees, swimming area and lifeguard, changing facilities, children’s climbing frame and concrete table tennis. There is also a bar with inside and outside tables for drinks, pizzas and things with chips. | ||

Although meant for children Janet had to try the climbing frame for size |

Another beach at Confalant can be seen across the river from St Jaques, it is part of a holiday village and also has camping facilities. It’s a bit of a drive but the views on the way are worth the effort. Here there is a bar serving good food either indoors, or on the terraced eating area offering fantastic views over the river. The usual lifeguard protected swimming, beach and sunbathing is directly behind Janet in the picture, with plenty of shade from trees in the afternoon. There is also a water sports centre where you can hire canoes, pedaloes, etc. A swimming pool is in the area but I don’t know if it is open to the public or is just for the village, but with the patrolled swimming area why would you want to use a swimming pool? |
